Dr. Robert Totman
Owner, Medical Director
Dr. Totman was raised in Wichita, Kansas, the eldest of three children. He started his veterinary career in Costa Mesa, California, at one of the first referral practices in Southern California. He eventually opened his first practice in Laguna Niguel, where he practiced for 20 years! In January 2003, he purchased Vineyard Veterinary Hospital, where he currently practices as Medical Director.
Dr. Totman has a special interest in soft tissue and orthopedic surgery. He also likes seeing young puppies grow into healthy adults and working with geriatric patients to deliver the best quality of life possible.
Dr. Totman lives with his wife Joan, the practice manager at Vineyard Veterinary Hospital, and their four dogs: Sully, Sophie, and Rylee. Dr. Totman enjoys woodworking, cooking, and wine tasting when not practicing veterinary care.
Joan is the Practice Manager at Vineyard Veterinary Hospital and spends her day caring for pets and their owners. Prior to becoming the practice manager, she worked on Wall Street for many years. Looking for a change, she applied for an Office Manager position at a local veterinary clinic. She was hired and 19 years later is still going strong in the profession. Now, as Practice Manager of Vineyard Veterinary Hospital, she gets to work alongside her husband, Dr. Totman. She makes sure the hospital has everything it needs for the team to do the best possible job and really takes pride in making sure the clients have an exceptional experience with every visit.
In her spare time, Joan likes to paint and garden. She also likes to cook and enjoy good wine with her husband.
Jim grew up on a farm in California where he helped care for every animal, from dogs, cats, and goats to turkeys, cows, pigs, and donkeys. He started his career working as a coffee shop manager for 20 years but decided it was time for a change. He signed up for a course in veterinary technology at his local community college and never looked back. He’s been in the veterinary field now for the past 12 years.
Jim has been a part of the Vineyard Veterinary Hospital family since May of 2018. He feels grateful to work with a talented team of animal lovers, and he also enjoys continuing to learn new things every day. When not helping to care for pets, Jim can work on home improvements or tend to his own small farm. He has two dogs, five indoor cats and five outdoor cats, chickens, turkeys, ducks, peafowl, emus, and a pair of three-legged rabbits!
