Dr. Robert Totman
Owner, Medical Director
When he was a toddler, Robert Totman’s family dog, Spot, would watch him as he played in their front yard. Occasionally, young Robert would wander toward the street. Spot would come up behind him and grab his diaper, pulling him back out of harm’s way! Now Robert gives back the compassion Spot gave him as a child, caring for pets every day as the Owner and Medical Director of Vineyard Veterinary Hospital.

Dr. Totman grew up in Wichita, Kansas, as the eldest of three children. His veterinary journey began in Costa Mesa, California, where he took a position at one of the first referral practices in Southern California. After a year, he was transferred to a satellite practice in San Clemente. He eventually opened up his first practice in Laguna Niguel, practicing there for 20 years! In January 2003 he purchased Vineyard Veterinary Hospital.

Soft-tissue and orthopedic surgery is a special area of interest for Dr. Totman, and he prides himself in his high surgery success rate. He also likes seeing young puppies grow into healthy adults, and working with geriatric patients to deliver the best quality of life possible.

Robert lives with his wife Joan—Practice Manger at Vineyard Veterinary Hospital—and their four dogs: Jimmy, a poodle; Sully, whose favorite pastime is eating; Sophie, who sees Robert off to work every morning, and Rylee, the baby Bichon.

In his spare time, Dr. Totman enjoys woodworking, cooking, and wine tasting. A carving that Robert did of a grapevine can even be seen at the clinic. He especially enjoys finding excellent wines for reasonable prices, before they are discovered by the general public!

I had to take my senior dog in for an emergency, the staff was outstanding as I really didn't think my baby was coming home. They were so understanding and kind!! This is the only place I would take my fur baby to. Thank you for your excellent service and compassion.

We lost our Koufax today, after losing Sandi in March. They both lived 16 wonderful years and were a part of our family almost from the time Ellen and I got married.
The house seems empty and it will be a long while before the sadness wanes, but their memories will always bring smiles to us.

Sandi and Koufax were both taken care of until their last day by the amazingly compassionate staff at Vineyard Veterinary Hospital. Even at their passing, Ellen and I and our dogs felt that we could not have been in better hands.
If in need of someone to care for your dog or cat, I highly recommend Dr. Totman, Joan, Verenice, Ashley and the rest of the staff at Vineyard.

Thank you so much for seeing my boy Chief. Our vets office was closed and my boy needed to be seen immediately. Not only did they fit us in, they stayed late, after closing, to ensure my boy was taken care of and I was put at ease. I can't thank you all enough
